Understanding
The MWS Ranking Formula
The MWS Ranking system is a very simple formula used to determine who the top
players in the world are. The rankings are based on awarding points to ballers
based on their performance in six areas: Nationals, MWS Sanctioned Leagues,
MWS Sanctioned Tournaments, MWS Sanctioned Match Play, past nationals, and tie
break points. Only tournaments operated under the rules and guidelines of the
MWS can be awarded points.
The following rationale has been used to suggest the point value system.
Nationals - The system is set up to recognize the winner of the national championship as the best player in the world. The system then acknowledges the runner up and final four participants for the abilty to advance deep into the tourney. Participants that advance to the second day of play or into the second round of the tournament are rewarded as well. For winning a round round game at nationals, a baller is rewarded with 5 pts. for each game won. And even participating at nationals earns a point. If a baller is willing to make the sacrafices to test his game at the highest level, they will be rewarded with a point.
League Points - A MWS Sanctioned league champion will be rewarded with 25 ranking points. League champions demonstrate the abilty to perform at a high level in what many baller think is the toughest competetive standards, League Play. The runner up in a league title game will be rewarded as well, in addition to conference championship participants. If a baller scores an undefeated season, he will be rewarded an additional 5 pts. for that amazing feat.
Sanctioned Tournaments - The MWS may sanction regional tournaments throughout the year. Participants will be rewarded based on how far they advance into the tourney. All participants will be awarded 1 pt. 2 pts. will be awarded for each win in the prelim rounds. Once a baller reaches the title the game, the champion will be awarded 20 pts. while the runner up will gain 10. In order for a tournament to gain MWS points, the tournament must be operated under MWS rules/guidelines.
Match Play Points - Match play will be held when two compete under sanctioned MWS terms. Match play competition will occur on a simple best of 5 series. Points are awarded or deducted based on the win/loss record in the series. (See below)
Previous Performance Points - To initiate rankings, previous performances shall be taken into account in order to get a more consistent evaluation of a ballers performance level. Ballers that have demonstrated a high caliber of play over the course of the past few years, yet, did not fare well at the most recent nationals will have the opportunity to earn a ranking that is consistent with their playing ability. Points are awarded from the past MWS rankings.
Tie Break Points - In the event of a tie between ballers with the same ranking points, the most recent results of any head to head competition would be awarded 1 tie break point to advance ahead in the ranking.
