Mapping Out A Victory

Knowing your playbook and understanding your rosters can be the difference between a W and L.

This type of screen shot can be saved as a graphic file, printed, then placed in your own personal playbook.

Madden 97 was the last edition to include a copy of the play sheet with the cd. But with versions 98 and 99, EA did not include a play sheet. Although some plays are virtually the same as they were in 1997, there are some new plays that have never been included in any Madden playbook. But that does not mean all payers must be left analyzing their plays in the 24 seconds between plays during the game. Some PFL members have taken it upon themselves to create their own playbooks. Not by studying and drawing the plays by hand, but by plugging thier psx console into their cpu and taking a photo image of each formation set and saving it as some kind of graphic. These files are saved, printed and assembled into a portfolio where the players can visually study them. Studying blocking schemes and pass routes are essential when playing a student of the game. When playing a well skilled opponent, one must exercise any advantage available. Knowing the pass routes when reading defenses gives you an idea of when a receiver makes his cut exactly where he will be. Also, knowing the blocking schemes helps with deciding the holes to run in and how to follow blocks on screens and draws and other running plays. Each play in every teams playbook can be successful when called at the right time against the right defense.

Rosters and Substitutions

Every serious Madden players should study his roster in detail. The default starter may not be the best player for that particular position depending upon your offensive strategies. A prime example of this is using Deion Sanders on offense. The Dallas Cowboys have wide receivers with very weak pass catching ratings. While Michael Irvin is a lock to catch whatever is thrown his direction, Billy Davis and Stepfret Williams, and Macy Brooks drop 3 of every four passes thrown their direction. So Charles, the PFL Dallas coach, uses Deion as a second or third receiver in addition to Chris Warren. It does no good to have Aikman, one of the most accurate passers in the league, if all the receivers drop his passes. Listed below is a ratings chart that explains each rating on the chart.

As you can see it is important to make sure that you have the db's with speed in the nickel packages or your best linebackers if you are going to match up against someone who likes to pass to the backs out of the backfield. You may have great run stoppers but fail to stop a screen. This is where subbing can be effective. Analyze your teams strengths and weaknesses. Do the same for your opponent. Then devise a game plan that will be effective and give you the best match ups.
